You and your rifle Most shots at caribou are taken across open tundra at ranges of 50 to 300 yards. often with a steady cross wind. We recommend flat shooting, medium calibre guns such as the .270 Winchester, the .30-06 Springfield or the 7mm Remington Magnum loaded with 130 to 150 grain bullets. In Ungava Quebec. hunters generally rely on bolt action rifles and good quality variable scopes sighted in for 200 yards. We also recommend you have a gun sling to make carrying the gun easier during the hunt. The success of your trip depends heavily on your shooting ability so we urge you to spend time at at) outdoor shooting range. preferably one with 200-yard targets. not only to sight your gun in, but also to get to know your equipment and your shooting ability. Be sure to vary the distances so that you can shoot quickly and accurately at any range. You should be totally familiar with your rifle. because when you're looking down the barrel at a trophy bull there is no time to doubt your ability ft, make a clean, one-shot kill. We also recommend that you transport your rifle in a rigid hard shell case to protect it during the flight to camp. You may also want to bring a padded soft case to protect your gun during the trips by boat to and from your actual hunting territory. While some ammunition is available in Kuujjuaq (Fort chimo), the supply is limited to a few popular calibres, so we suggest you bring an adequate supply of the rounds used to sight in your rifle. There is no restriction on bringing hunting rifles (or bows. for that matter) into Canada, but handguns of any kind are strictly prohibited, Remember to register your guns with Customs officials from your country before entering Canada so that you'll have no problem proving ownership of the firearms when you return.
