Land of Trophy Caribou
Far beyond the rumble of diesels and the rush of sensation seeking crowds lies the frontier to adventure. A land that's unfettered by fences, a land which restores
your individuality. It's the land of the caribou, lords of the tundra. Creatures which, by nature, shun the ordered patterns of life to wander freely to follow the restless winds across barren tundra.

They're magnificent animals, these Ungava caribou, especially the big, white- manned bachelor bulls when, in late summer, they come down out of the hinterlands to claim their harems. Weighing some 350 pounds, these bulls proudly sport massive back swept antlers that reach some four feet high with a spread of sometimes over five feet. They're the most impressive caribou of North America, both in stature and numbers. According to a 1990 census conducted by government biologists, Quebec's Ungava caribou herds have reached the 600,000 mark and continue to mushroom at a rate of about 12 percent a year.

Originally, these caribou comprised what was known as the George River herd, but about a decade ago the animals adjusted to their population explosion by breaking into five splinter groups with an accompanying shift in their migration routes, The shift, unfortunately, circumvented many of the previously productive hunting camps further south.

Over and over, racks taken at Arctic Adventures camps list high in the record books. Every season caribou taken by hunters at Arctic Adventures camps scored out at well over the minimum of 375 points to make the Boone & Crockett record books. Among them am many outstanding trophies. It's just a matter of time before a new world record is set.

In recent years we've also found a non-migratory herd of big caribou along the southeast shore of Ungava Bay where we established our Akuliak Caribou Camp.

This is the place to go if you're looking for a record book trophy. Biologists am convinced the next world record caribou will come from the Koroc herd and hunters who have visited the area think likewise. According to the game managers. the animals feed frequently on mineral rich seaweed along the shoreline and come down to the water's edge to lick the salt crusted rocks. This. along with the herd's non-migratory nature allows them to grow record book racks.
