The Resource
Tuckamore Lodge is located in the center of a vast region of exceptional natural beauty. There are long stretches of sandy beach, rocky headlands
that rise to Incredible heights, and tiny outport communities tucked away in sheltered coves.The countryside teems with wildlife. Majestic moose, herds of caribou, and huge black bears roam the area in great numbers. The rivers and streams are home to the Atlantic Salmon, and the lakes and ponds are filled with trout from pan size to record size.

Southwest Pond, home to Tuckamore, is also home to several Bald Eagles, Loons and other birds of interest. Moose are plentiful and visit shores of the pond almost daily. A quiet evening walk will take you past a beaver lodge or gentle river steady.

For the photographer, Main Brook is a life time dream. Deep fjords cut into the rugged East Coast providing

shelter for the villages of with the ancient names of Harbour Deep and Hooping Harbour. This isolation has caused time, in many ways, to stand still, preserving these special places and a lifestyle unknown in the modern world.

For the naturalist, Newfoundland's boreal barrens offer rich diversity of wild flowers and plants. The variety is overwhelming and the color spectacular. Migratory seabirds abound in the coastlines of the nearby ecological reserve. Common Eiders, Quillmonts, Comorants, Terns, Ospreys and Puffins sweep overhead dazzle observer.

Whale watching is a Tuckamore specialty. Some of our guests have been returning to the Lodge year after year for prize winning photos. Hare Bay has been noted for some of the best sighting opportunities on the Island.

But summer is not the. only time of the year for Tuckamore's Wildnis opportunities. Take an afternoon to go ice fishing, Skidooing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing are all right here at the Lodge. For the more adventurous, an overnight trip in the country can be arranged.

Tuckamore Lodge and Outfitters


Nestled in The protective beauty of Southwest Pond, a mile or so from Main Brook, Tuckamore Lodge is a large architecturally -designed A-frame facility of both functional and aesthetic beauty. It features four private rooms (sleeping two to a room), baths and showers,
and a hot tub and sauna to take the kinks out after a day on the river.

There is a large but cozy dining room where robust breakfasts and Newfoundland classics of salmon, cod, crab, beef and home grown vegetables are served up in generous portions. Not to leave out the glorious flavors of wild partridgeberries, raspberries, strawberries, and tilt fabulous bakeapples (cloudberries).

Guides
The Tuckamore guides have received intensive, formal training in all aspects of Wildnis expeditions. This hand-picked group represents some of Northern Newfoundland's finest - from camp cooking to tackle repair to wildflower identification to family canoeing.
Activities
Apart from hunting and fishing, there are some fascinating sights in our area. Each summer great icebergs - white ice ships - glide into Hare Bay, reminders that the Canadian Arctic isn't all that far away. The Grey Islands host Newfoundland's important woodland caribou nursery - a herd of more than 500 animals - as well as large colonies of Eiderducks, Puffin and Seals. The important Viking settlement of L'Anse aux-Meadows is north of Main Brook at St. Anthony. which is also the site of the famous Grenfell Medical Mission.

The vast high country, across the smooth granite left by the Wisconsin ice sheet 10,000 years ago, is a mass of streams and ponds and lakes scattered across the tundra, unlike anything you will ever see anywhere else.

Deep fjords cut into the peninsula at such colorful places as Harbour Deep, tiny communities reached only by boat or plane.


The Great Northern Peninsula of Western Newfoundland is one of Atlantic Canada's most intriguing Wildnis areas: vast networks of streams and rivers and ponds hold Atlantic salmon and brook trout in substantial numbers, surrounded by Tuckamore forests of balsam and fir that hide moose and bear, while caribou move
across the tundra of the high country. How to Get Here
Flights from Boston, New York, Toronto, Montreal or Halifax to Deer Lake or St. Anthony, Newfoundland can be arranged by your travel agent or by the Lodge. Ground transportation to and from the airport included in the weekly rate.

If you wish to drive, Marine Atlantic provides year-round vehicle and passenger ferry service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Make sure that you or the Lodge has made reservations before you leave.

What to Expect
